WOW, everyone is paranoid about the H1N1 around here. I'm glad though. My boss usually doesn't care at all. But I'm a little scared too.

In any case, the WIP is here:

I have to work on the face, the scarf and yes, the background. I want something more sci-fi looking for this one.

No references for this one. I really, really want to be able draw anatomy perfectly from my mind, so there I must keep practicing. My results are inconsistent (sometimes great, sometimes not so) and that's very annoying to me. But well, at some point it will come naturally to me. I got a really great dynamic figure drawing book from where I have to study and memorize proportions and rules.

PS. Oh yeah, I was thinking Emma Frost when I painted those gloves.

Not so sick anymore! Stuffy tho...

I'm still progressing on my elven couple pic but very slowly. The colours are ~~probably~~ MOST DEFINITELY off cause this was imported back from working on my laptop. The desktop is still acting up... but at least the colours are OK. Today's progress was clean up, composition and overall fixing up of booboos. And 1h of colour correcting a hideous orange overtone from my adventures on the laptop...

PREVIOUSLY...

I'm sick. Spent yesterday in bed and today at home, cozy and warm. So I was bored and sketched quite a bit. Well, mostly I refined 3 sketches quite a bit. They are ready to be coloured.

The following is a WIP of sketch#1 being coloured and a little textured. The skin tones need to be refined not to mention all the details such as hair (!)... But I started.

I was looking at it and I thought that the pose would work for an Uhura Spock pic... I might do it as an exercise at some point.

Basic colouring done. I had some fun playing with colour in the absence of my tablet...

I intended Sarek, but I think it turned Spockish in the end. :D 'Tis not finished. I gotta colour it. I think it's possible that I turn it into Sarek... Are full Vulcan's eyes all black??

I've discovered that using my pencils makes me happier than sketching on the computer...

Another WIP and the Colonel got the ax. Although, I might still include him on the left...

I've been sketching lots of things! A couple of gypsies, a fortuneteller, a windswept fantasy lady and a set of muffins... :D Meaning Darcy, Bingley and Colonel er... Fitzwilliam. I just came across that nickname and think it fits nicely. :D The Jane Austen fan in me was stirred by remembering the story "For the Love of Jane" by Teresa AF. It's not finished, but the Colonel has made an impression (along other brilliantly developed characters...

So, I'll be colouring something soon, but I gotta scan some sketches first.

I finally made the time to start shading them.

I know there's a lot to do and correct, but well...
I had them on a dark background at first but the light version looked more romantic to me. I'm still undecided on how dark his robes should be. And her dress, hmmm, it was red to start with! This silvery seems to go better. I'm playing, what can I say. :D

I wanted to do it for a while, but I was worried that I wouldn't get them right. It is rare that I work on art from a character portrayed by an actor or actress because of that. It is not ZQ or ZS but I like how they look so far. There's a likeness... :) I'm not sure if this first sketch will make to the colouring stage, but I have started. Will post the WIP soonish.

UPDATE:

It is not perfect, I know this, but I've already started correcting booboos in both figure's arms, his pecks and the fabric flow of his sleeve and her dress on paper. It is my hope to start painting it tomorrow. But maybe I'll work on another sketch first... :D

In any case, The Phoenix Requiem is a graphic novel by Sarah Ellerton. It is amazing and I'm an avid follower (AKA addict) via steshin. If you have time to kill, give it a go, you might find yourself making time for it later. :D

Life's being its usual demanding self, but I managed to squeeze a few precious hours for some artwork. One of my favorite artists (vyrl) is holding a contest and I's like to take part. The longing for my art supplies was great, so I picked up my trusty mechanical pencil and my eraser and got to it. Once I was happy with one of my sketches, I worked a little more on it, meaning to clean up the lines only, but one little improvement lead to the next and it ended up being all pencil shaded. I didn't realize how much I missed plain, old-style drawing. It can be so relaxing.

And

I painted it over in Photoshop, using yuni's coloring techique (very cool and powerful stuff). Now, because this was originally shaded with pencil, it became grainy when I tried to ad more contrast to the dark shadows. I kinda liked the grain in the beginning, yet I think I should smooth it now. The details are lost. In the samples above details got even more lost when I applied effects to smooth the grain, so I'll have to paint it over... there's time, though. I want to do this right as I admire (a lot) Vyrl's renditions of her character (Elwen).

The contest runs until August, so I think I'm going to work on a second entry when this one is done. It will be a guy this time. I want to paint some some sexy abs! And I need to practice drawing males...

A Taste of Goodness

That's the title I chose for the painting I submitted to the Wacom contest over at Deviantart. The theme was good vs. evil. I interpreted using fantasy elements and balance of power. Either the dragon eats the fairy (hence, tastes her) or he tastes the sting of her power.

There are more than ten thousand entries so far. I never imagined there would be so many. The judges are going to have a hard time choosing. Even looking through the whole thing is going to take a long time. I guess that's why DA's staff is going to make a pre-selection of 50 finalists for the judges to look at. The judging should start on June 29... A whole month is a good time to look at every piece. Oh, well, there's not a thing to worry about. :)

Regardless, I did learn a lot from this painting. Scales are a b**** for one. :D. Also, there is no doubt in my mind about the immense power of photoshop. There's so much you can do with it. I had a lot of fun using the warp tool for this project.

Is blue, is cute, is up and running!

Took me long enough to get to it, but at last, my personal site is done. I have to expand it and improve it over time, but it will do for the moment. There are just a few samples of what I do, because my older stuff is scattered all over the place. I need time to track digital sources for posters/invitations/logos/renders/younameit. But I'll get to it, eventually.
